When you shop for a new Toyota vehicle you may have noticed a list of safety features in the vehicle’s description. Every new and used Toyota model comes with the Toyota Safety Sense™ driver-assist system standard on each of their trim levels. This highly-praised system is built with advanced driver-assist and safety technology to keep you and your passengers safe as you drive through St. Augustine.
The Toyota Safety Sense™ system first became available in 2015 with systems like Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) and Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P). The most current system is the Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS 2.5). The system uses a combination of cameras, radar, and lasers mounted in a vehicle’s windshield, front grille, and bumpers to monitor other vehicles, objects, and pedestrians on the road. Toyota Safety Sense™ will use audible and visual alerts to indicate that the driver needs to take action to avoid a collision. If the driver doesn’t respond – or is unable to respond – some systems will step in and either apply the brakes or move the vehicle to prevent a collision.
There are four main types of Toyota Safety Sense™ systems and a suite of features offered on each model. Follow along with Beaver Toyota St. Augustine as we cover the different features and the different Toyota Safety Sense™ systems available – including the new Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 (TSS-2.5) – for your Jacksonville commute.
The latest Toyota safety system is Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS-2.5). Currently only available on the 2021 Toyota Camry and the 2021 Toyota Highlander, this innovative new system builds on the programs offered in Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS-2.0) and adds an advanced camera, millimeter-wave radar, and grille-mounted radar to improve response range and enhance pedestrian detection. Intersection Support was added to offer assistance when drivers approach an intersection to make a turn and another vehicle or a pedestrian is in the road. Emergency steering assist is another new system that will help drivers stabilize steering maneuvers while avoiding another vehicle, pedestrian, or object to keep their vehicle in its lane. Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS-2.5) will be available on more Toyota vehicles as newer model years become available.
Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS-2.0) is an advanced suite of the safety systems offered on Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) and Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P). This new Toyota safety system is available on Toyota models that are from 2018 up to the current model year. Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS-2.0) systems are designed to help address three key areas of accident protection: Preventing or mitigating frontal collisions, keeping drivers within their lane, and enhancing road safety during nighttime driving. A camera, a millimeter-wave radar, and a grille-mounted radar monitor a vehicle’s projected path and offer features like Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, Road Sign Assist, and Lane Tracing assist.
Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) was one of the first official Toyota Safety Sense™ systems and is available on mid-size and large Toyota vehicles like the Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Sienna. This driver assist system uses a camera and a millimeter-wave radar at the front of the model to search for other vehicles, smaller vehicles like motorcycles, bikes, and pedestrians. If Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) detects a potential collision, it will alert the driver or take evasive action between 7 and 110 MPH. Pedestrian detection, Steering Assist, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) are also common systems on Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P).
Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) debuted alongside Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) for compact Toyota vehicles like the Toyota Corolla. A camera and laser radar at the front of the model monitor other vehicles on the road. This system offers driving alerts and can take evasive action when the vehicle is driving between 7 and 85 MPH. Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) features include Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Vehicle Detection, Lane Departure Alert (LDA), and Automatic High Beams (AHB).
